ABOUT

I was born into an environment where the internet wasn’t just a tool to be used, but the place I grew up in.

Connection wasn’t readily available to me, so I went looking for it, and the internet seemed like the solution.

Being part of this ecosystem for so long, I came to realize that the digital world was changing the world around me more than the reality I lived in was changing it. The pixels on the screen representing my artwork could matter more than the artwork itself. The physical touch of a brush could matter less than its digital representation on someone’s screen.

I’ve always thought of this feeling as a spiral: something that can pull things together while simultaneously pushing them apart. It reflects the hyper-systematic yet chaotic world I feel myself living in—the hyper-reality.

Within this hyper-reality, the Alisa Chung I see in the mirror every morning is different from the colorful character of Alisa Chung that exists on your screen. But neither feels completely false to me. They are two versions of the same person, shaped by different realities.

My practice exists in the space between them. I’m interested in the gap between the person I experience myself to be and the person that exists in other people’s minds. Bridging that gap has become the purpose of my work.
